CANNES — On the heels of their new historical miniseries “The Crusaders,” Kirch Media, Italian production company Lux Vide and RAI Trade are bringing an updated version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” to the small screen for Italian pubcaster RAI.
The two-parter moves the story of the bloodsucking Transylvanian count to modern day Budapest and the Romanian hinterland. Pic stars Patrick Bergin, Hardy Kruger Jr., Giancarlo Giannini, Stefania Rocca and Muriel Baumeister. Roger Young directed the project from a screenplay by Eric Lerner.
European companies looking to broaden sales are increasingly making internationally palatable big-event telepics, of which “Dracula,” now in post-production, is another example. Pic’s on offer at Mipcom.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Victory Media and toon maker Neptuno Films Deutschland are co-producing two new animated series aimed at the international market.
“Cat in Boots” is a slapstick version of Charles Perrault’s fairy tale “Puss in Boots,” while “Ambi & Lance” is aimed at preschoolers.
Production on the series is to begin next year; Neptuno will handle sales and distribution.
