Showtime bows ‘America’

Dickerson to helm pic based on award-winning docus, novel

Showtime has announced the production of original pic “Our America” to star Mykelti Williamson, Vanessa Williams, Irma P. Hall and Josh Charles. Film will bow in February to coincide with Black History Month.

Joseph Stern (“Judging Amy,” “Law & Order”) and Angela Bassett will executive produce; Eda Godel Hallinan will produce. Ernest Dickerson (“Juice,” “Surviving the Game”) will direct from a script by Gordon Rayfield (“Stand Up,” “Law & Order”).

“Our America” is based on the book of the same name by LeAlan Jones, Lloyd Newman and David Isay. In 1993, NPR producer Isay enlisted the teenage Jones and Newman to chronicle their lives as residents of Chicago’s impoverished South Side. These stories became a pair of award-winning documentaries, “Ghetto Life 101” and “Remorse: The 14 Stories of Eric Morse,” about Jones and Newman’s investigation of a local tragedy.
