Sat dishes gain Italo ground

Eurosport tops list with Discovery, RAISport, Cartoon Net trailing

MILAN — The number of satellite dishes in Italy rose 39% to 2.5 million at the end of March from 1.75 million a year earlier, according to a report published Friday by research company Makno.

The most popular satellite TV channel in Italy is France-based international sports web Eurosport, which 1.05 million Italian households watch at least once a week.

Second most watched service is Discovery Channel (905,000 households), followed by Italo pubcaster RAI’s RAISport (790,000), Cartoon Network (595,000) and RAI News 24 (555,000), the CNN-style news channel aired by pubcaster RAI. CNN itself is sixth with 440,000 households.
