‘Millionaire’ winner under investigation

Audience member may have tipped off contestant

LONDON — Scotland Yard is investigating whether a £1 million ($1.5 million) winner on ITV quizzer “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” cheated with the aid of an ally in the audience.

The police, the web and “Millionaire” producer Celador are said to be particularly suspicious that the contestant, Major Charles Ingram, was tipped on the final question by a friend who coughed to signal the correct answer.

The question was, “What is the name of the number that is a one followed by 100 zeros?” The answer is googol.

The show was recorded Sept. 10 but was pulled from its skedded Sept. 18 broadcast.
