MILAN — Enrico Mentana, powerful head of news for Mediaset flagship web Canale5, is staying with Silvio Berlusconi’s TV group following the elections that swept Berlusconi into power on May 13.
Mentana had been discussing an extremely lucrative contract with La7, formerly known as TeleMontecarlo (TMC), the weblet Vittorio Cecchi Gori sold to telco giant Telecom Italia.
Mentana has accepted a five-year contract worth a rumored 7 billion lire a year ($3.2 million) — “less money” than La7 offered, he claimed.
La7, which manages just 2% aud share, has invested $140 million in youth-skewed programming and plans to relaunch in September.
Telecom Italia has hired a number of veterans, including journalist Gad Lerner and presenter Fabio Fazio from pubcaster RAI and top managers like programming director Claudio Giovalli and CEO Ernesto Mauri, both from Mediaset.
