LONDON — Nigel Lythgoe, the producer behind the ITV network’s successful version of reality skein “Popstars,” is leaving Granada Media subsid LWT to head 19 TV, a production company set up by ex-Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller.
Vet producer Lythgoe, 51, is in Borneo working on ITV’s “Survivor” and will join 19 TV after the production has finished in the summer.
He was controller of entertainment for six years at LWT, ITV’s weekend station for London.
One of his immediate tasks will be to oversee “Pop Idol,” a co-production with Pearson Television for ITV that will take the “Popstars” format and apply it to finding a single pop star, as opposed to a group.
Fuller has also tasted success with S Club 7, the manufactured pop act that is a hit on TV and on the music charts.
