KMEX makes news in adult demos race

Stations newscasts top all others in Los Angeles

While Los Angeles Spanish-lingo TV station KMEX traditionally has something to talk about when demographic results are released for ratings sweeps, February was particularly sweet for the Univision station.

For the first time, all three of the station’s newscasts — at 6 a.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. — outrated all other Los Angeles TV stations in the adult 18-34 and 18-49 demos.

At 6 p.m., KMEX’s newscast “Noticias 34” ranked No. 1 among stations airing half-hour local newscasts in adults 18-34 (4.7 rating), 18-49 (4.1), 25-49 (4.3) and 25-54 (3.9), according to Nielsen.

Telemundo scores

Fellow Spanish-lingo station KVEA, Telemundo’s L.A. presence, took second place at 6 p.m. among adults 18-34, with a 1.6 rating.

KABC’s “Eyewitness News” was second among the other key adult demos that KMEX dominated, with a 2.1 among adults 18-49, 2.3 in 25-49 and 2.8 in 25-54.

KNBC was a close third among adults 18-49 (2.0) and 18-54 (2.7).

At 6 a.m., KMEX’s “Primera Edicion,” which preemed in January 1999, earned a market-topping 1.5 rating among adults 18-34, a 1.7 in 18-49 and a 1.7 in 25-49, according to Nielsen.

KNBC led the adults 25-54 category at 6 a.m. with a 2.0 to KMEX’s 1.6.

KNBC and Fox’s KTTV tied for second at 6 a.m. in the adult 18-34 category, with 0.8 each, and Tribune’s KTLA was second among adults 18-49, with a 1.4. KTLA also placed second among 25-49, with a 1.6.

Tops at 11 p.m.

KMEX also led the high-profile 11 p.m. local news race in the adult 18-34 and 18-49 categories, with a 3.9 and 3.4, respectively.

KNBC, which led the time period in households for the sweep, was close behind among adults 18-49, however, with a 3.3.

KNBC easily topped the time period in adults 25-49, with a 4.0, as well as in 25-54, with a 4.5.

KMEX was second in adults 25-49, with a 3.2, and KABC was second among adults 25-54, with a 3.2.

In the traditionally heated Monday-Sunday 10 p.m. local news race, KTTV’s newscast, which beat KTLA’s in households for first, led the key adult demos, with KTLA consistently in second.

In adults 18-34, KTTV earned a 3.7 to KTLA’s 1.1, while in adults 18-49, KTTV led newscasts with a 3.6, followed by KTLA’s 1.8.

Among adults 25-54, KTTV earned a 3.5 to KTLA’s 2.2.

In primetime (8-11 p.m.), KTTV, whose primetime runs 8-10 p.m., ranked first among adults 18-49, with a 5.5, followed by KMEX (5.4), KNBC (4.7), KABC (4.0) and KCBS (3.5).

Among adults 25-54 in primetime, KNBC led with a 5.7, followed by KTTV (5.3), KMEX (4.9), KABC (4.7) and KCBS (4.5).

The breakfast 7-9 a.m. news race was KTLA’s among adults 25-54 for the 10th straight February sweep, with a leading 2.3 rating, followed by KTTV (1.8), KNBC (1.7), KABC (1.4) and KCBS (0.2).

In adults 18-49, KTLA and KTTV tied, with a 1.8, followed by KNBC, with a 1.2, KABC, 1.0, and KCBS, 0.1.
