A daughter of Silvio Santos, the wealthy owner of No. 2 Brazilian broadcaster SBT, was kidnapped Tuesday morning in Sao Paolo.
SBT asked for a news blackout on the kidnapping of Patricia Abravanel, 24, in order not to affect the investigation. The details of the crime are unclear.
However, 24-hour news net Globo News broke the story. Other local media have respected SBT’s request.
Later in the day, TV Globo communications director Luiz Erlanger issued a statement defending the net’s decision. Although Brazil has had several waves of kidnappings since the late 1980s, only isolated incidents have been made public over the past three years.
