The 2001-02 season hasn’t even started yet, but the competition already is getting brutal.
CBS has decided to air a special episode of its summer reality success “Big Brother 2” on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m. — smack-dab against the premiere of NBC’s limited-run reality skein “Lost.”
What’s more, the “Big Brother” spec is expected to feature a visit from members of the original cast of the Eye’s megasuccessful “Survivor.” No word yet on details, but insiders speculate the ex-survivors will be involved in some sort of competition with the “Brother” houseguests.
The “Brother” stunting comes after NBC’s decision to air an original episode of the Peacock summer smash “Fear Factor” opposite the 9 p.m. Sept. 5 bow of the Eye’s much-hyped “Amazing Race.”
CBS topper Leslie Moonves said the special “Brother” isn’t simply retaliation for NBC’s aggressive scheduling. ” ‘Big Brother’ is a better lead-in for ‘The Amazing Race,’ ” Moonves said.
NBC Entertainment prexy Jeff Zucker said the CBS move was “expected.”
“All is fair in love and war,” he said. “Payback is hell.”
Meanwhile, CBS continues to work on new reality projects. The latest concept in development, called “The Farm,” has city slickers fighting it out rural-style.
