PARIS — French helmer Jean-Jacques Beneix has defended controversial reality TV show “Loft Story,” which he plans to make a documentary about.
The “Diva” director criticized those who have “great disdain for the masses and their amusements,” adding: “Authorized culture can do whatever it likes but games for the common man are always criticized by ‘virtuous’ people.
“Why shouldn’t the public be allowed to dream of fame and money when those who already have money are even more hungry for fame?”
The “Big Brother”-style TV show has catapulted M6, France’s second web, to the top of the ratings –provoking the ire of leading web TF1, as well as the broadcasting authority and an array of politicians, newspaper columnists and opinion leaders.
Beneix became one of the few public figures to defend the show on Sunday, in an interview on radio station France Inter.
