HBO is developing a pic based on John Steinbeck’s 1961 novel “Travels With Charley,” to be exec produced by the author’s son Thomas Steinbeck — who is penning the adaptation — and Mark Wolper.
John Irvin is on board to direct and Gail Knight and Erin Martin are co-exec producing.
Project is being produced for HBO by Warner Bros. Television.
Charley was Steinbeck and his wife’s pet poodle. The novel took its cue from a 10,000-mile journey the couple took with Charley. Book was one of Steinbeck’s largest commercial successes.
Kevin Costner and Jim Wilson’s Tig Prods. in the 1990s was developing an eight-hour miniseries version of “Charley.” The project did not wind up getting produced, and Tig’s option expired a few years ago, sources said.
Next year will be the centenary of Steinbeck’s birth. A yearlong celebration kicks off on his birthdate, Feb. 7.
