Gorillaz top MTV Euro noms

Craig David, Limp Bizkit and U2 receive four noms each

LONDON — Toon band Gorillaz has scored the most nominations in the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The band — fronted by Brit singer Damon Albarn — leads the pack with six noms including group, song and video for “Clint Eastwood.”

British R&B performer Craig David, U.S. rock band Limp Bizkit and Ireland’s U2 received four noms each for the awards, which will take place Nov. 8 at Frankfurt’s Festhalle.

Providing the entertainment will be Germany’s Rammstein, U.S. punk-rock band Blink-182, Craig David, Depeche Mode, Destiny’s Child, Dido and Janet Jackson. Presenters include Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, Eddy Grant, Kylie Minogue and German model Heidi Klum.

In all, 22 awards are up for grabs. The nine regional prizes, such as best German act, are chosen by the viewers of MTV’s regional services. This year’s eighth annual awards will include the first Web Award.

The event will be hosted by Britain’s Ali G, the satirical character created by Sacha Baron Cohen. “Ali G has made a career out of being a North London Jewish boy playing a streetwise Jamaican, and is a sensation in the U.K.,” Brent Hansen, MTV Network Europe’s prexy-CEO, told Daily Variety. “I am really excited about him after last year’s show.”

Hansen said MTV decided to go ahead with the ceremony despite the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. “It’s the most important thing we do all year,” he said. “It’s the moment when we provide a show for the whole world. … Humans are an optimistic race and it’s better to look forward rather than back. As far as we know, everyone is still coming.”
