German digital TV is delayed

World Brief

With the agreement by German broadcasters to use the MHP standard for digital TV reception, Kabel NRW has said it will postpone the introduction of digital TV in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia until next year.

Kabel NRW, controlled by U.S. firm Callahan Associates, said it has to wait until MHP decoders hit the market before it will launch digital TV as part of its broadband services, now expected to start in the middle of next year.

The cable systems in North Rhine-Westphalia are being upgraded for digital TV, video-on-demand, high-speed Internet access and telephony services.
