Emmys writers & directors: Helmer’s POV – Todd Holland

Six nominations, five for "The Larry Sanders Show," one for "Malcolm in the Middle"; two wins, "Larry Sanders" in 1998, "Malcolm" in 2000

Inspirations: “‘MASH’ is the show that was startling. It wove together raw emotional power and offbeat comedy in a real artful way that you don’t see on TV. People judge half-hour comedy on the laughs-per-minute quotient. ‘MASH’ didn’t go for that. It had a lot of laughs but wasn’t afraid not to have them.”

Influences: “David Lynch on ‘Twin Peaks,’ I was a huge fan of that pilot. It was devastatingly suspenseful and emotional television.”

Moments: “One of my all-time favorites is a show I directed that was listed in TV Guide’s top 100 shows. It was my very first ‘My So Called Life.’ (Actress) A.J. Langer showed up with chicken pox and we had to work around her character to convey all this information and we had to do it on set. It turned out to be a fantastic episode and we had to do it on gut instinct, which you don’t get to do on TV very often.”
