Emmys writers & directors: Helmer’s POV – Marty Callner

Two nominations, "Garth Live From Central Park" in 1998, "Bette Midler: Diva Las Vegas" in 1997

Inspirations: “The real directorial breakthrough in TV came with MTV. I left television directing to do videos, because there were no more rules. I could use jump cuts and other devices to create a visual experience that was not allowed in television up until that point.”

Influences: “I was heavily influenced by Dwight Hemion. He was my idol. The shows that jumped off the screen were always his. Lighting, which I think is so important, was influenced by Dwight.”

Moments: “I’ve had a lot of highs, but there was a show I did recently that didn’t get as much recognition. It was Marc Anthony, an artist who was just about to go mainstream and we built that from the ground up. It was a magical show.”
