For first-time contender Frankie Muniz, Emmy nominations mean pain. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy the accolades, rather, it’s his teeth.

“When I got nominated for the Golden Globe, I got to celebrate by going to the dentist,” the “Malcolm in the Middle” star tells Daily Variety. “This time it was the orthodontist.”

By now, though, the excitement of an comedy actor nom is easing the pain of Muniz’s oral surgery. In fact, he was excited even before the announcement.

“We couldn’t sleep the night before. I really don’t know why, though, because I really didn’t think I had a shot,” Muniz says. Nonetheless, he and his mother were in front of the TV at 5 a.m. to hear his name called. “We went crazy. So it was cool when it really happened and everything.

“Since then my phone’s been ringing off the hook, non-stop. I’ve heard from people I haven’t talked to in years, grandparents I didn’t know I had. It’s pretty wild.

“I’m really, really, like really honored, because they’re putting me against people I’m huge fans of,” he continues. “I don’t consider myself even remotely as good as they are. I just do what I do; they’re hilarious.”

At 15, Muniz talks of working for five more years, then retiring. He is an avid drummer and admits that despite his TV success, a music career tempts him. But right now he’s just enjoying seeing his name among some of the best talent in the business.

He hasn’t dared rehearse an acceptance speech, and based on his experiences at other award shows, he says he probably won’t.

“When I’m up there, I’m so nervous. I think if I try to remember a speech, I’ll just mess myself up more. But I don’t expect to be going onstage, you know.”
