‘Danny’ first fall casualty

Stern starrer likely to be joined in the coming weeks

Let the cancellations begin: CBS has pulled the plug on “Danny,” making the laffer the first official casualty of the 2001-02 season.

The Eye killed the Daniel Stern starrer — which was developed under the working title “American Wreck” — after two extraordinarily low-rated episodes. For now, the show’s 8:30 p.m. Friday timeslot will be filled with repeats of “Yes, Dear” and other CBS comedies.

While “Danny” is the first cancellation of the season, it’s likely to be followed by several more axings over the next few weeks as the nets firm lineups before the November sweeps.

Fox’s “Pasadena” continues to struggle mightily on Friday nights, while “The Mole 2” on ABC has failed to reconnect with its younger aud on Fridays. The Alphabet’s Tuesday sked may also be up for retooling.

“Danny” bowed Sept. 28, attracting 5.98 million viewers and averaging a 2.2 rating/7 share with adults 18-49. Its second episode, which aired last Friday, sank to 5.07 million viewers and 1.8/6 in the key demo– losing 15% of its already-tiny premiere week aud.

The skein also lost a sizable chunk of its “Ellen” lead-in.

By comparison, CBS averaged 13.1 million viewers and a 3.7/13 among adults 18-49 during the same half-hour last season with its remake of “The Fugitive.”

“Danny” revolved around Stern’s character, a recently divorced dad who spends much of him time at a neighborhood rec center.

Big Ticket Television topper Larry Lyttle, whose company produced “Danny,” was philosophical. “I appreciate all the great support CBS gave to the show, but that’s what happens in life,” he told Daily Variety.
