Farmer Hoggett goes to Washington: James Cromwell (“Babe”) has been cast as the lead in the John Wells / CBS drama pilot “The Second Act.”
Cromwell will play a recently retired U.S. senator who returns home and reconnects with his three grown daughters and their families.
Wells executive produces, along with Lydia Woodward. CBS gave a 13-episode commitment to the drama.
While perhaps best known as the kind-hearted farmer in “Babe” (for which he earned an Oscar nomination) and its sequel, “Babe: Pig in the City,” Cromwell’s lengthy list of credits also includes the more recent films “Space Cowboys,” “The Green Mile” and “The General’s Daughter.”
Cromwell also appeared in features such as “L.A. Confidential,” “Star Trek: First Contact” and “Deep Impact.” On television, Cromwell was featured in the TV movies “Fail Safe” and “RKO 281.”
Thesp recently guested on multiple episodes of Wells’ NBC drama “ER”; other guest stints include “L.A. Law,” “Home Improvement” and “Picket Fences.”
In addition to “The Second Act,” Wells also has a two-hour backdoor pilot in the works at TNT, which he’ll exec produce along with Carol Flint and Paris Barclay.
