MERIDA, Mexico — Programmers, cablers and satcasters have joined to form the Colombian Pay TV Defense Alliance, an org designed to fight piracy.
The participants will work together to combat signal theft; to create an industry database for Colombia; and to lessen taxes levied on pay TV operations in Colombia, the highest in the region according to the Television Association of Programmers (TAP) which reps 26 pan regional feevees.
The database aims to list all legal cable operators and their audited sub numbers, creating a benchmark for the country’s TV business to use; a sub audit is a condition of membership in the alliance.
Besides TAP, participating groups include the Motion Picture Assn.; the Asociacion de Empresas Concensionarias de Television por Suscripcion (ATVS), which reps 35 newly licensed MSOs in Colombia; and the Asociacion de Television Paga (TVP) — currently TV Cable Bogota, Direct TV and Sky.
