‘Big Brother’ reigning in Spain

Airing wins 36.3% share, 13.7 rating

MADRID — The second season of “Big Brother” has bowed to hit ratings in Spain despite strong ammunition fired at it by other webs.

Airing on Tele 5 Sunday night, the intro special to “Gran Hermano” scored a 36.3% share and 13.7 rating, barely beating the “Big Brother” debut last April, despite strong competition from pubcaster RTVE, which counterprogrammed with “Dante’s Peak.”

Wednesday’s two-hour spec also proved to be the day’s top-rated program, although “The Shawshank Redemption” on RTVE made it close.

Ratings confirm many analysts’ hunch that in Spain for the immediate future, the only reality soap likely to match “Big Brother’s” share last year could be its follow-up in 2001.
