ARD, ZDF score soccer from Kirch

World Brief

The Kirch Group has sold pubcasters ARD and ZDF broadcasting rights to two dozen 2002 World Cup soccer matches for roughly $100 million.

Deal still has to get a greenlight from the pubcasters’ advisory boards. The stations are at odds with Kirch because the company won’t give the channels an option on the 2006 championships, which will be held in Germany.

Kirch and a Swiss rights marketing agency paid $1.5 billion for rights to the 2002 and 2006 World Cup championships.
