Cabler renews hits, scores NBA all-stars

MTV ushers in 2002 with the final feature installment of animated series “Daria” in January, but then takes a bleaker perspective several months later. “Going to Wasted,” a look at youthful heroin users in Texas, will bow in March, notes Brian Graden, MTV programming president.

“It’s been a great development year,” says Graden. “We’re renewing hits such as ‘Cribs,’ ‘Diary,’ ‘Flipped’ and ‘Andy Dick.’ I’d like to take credit, but there’s always a portion of luck.”

For the first time, Graden confirms, MTV will cover the National Basketball Assn.’s all-star game with a live four-hour presentation the weekend of Feb. 8.

The network will travel south Feb. 12 to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, another first for the cabler.

Sister channel VH1 is developing a live music-oriented show, tentatively titled “Live From Hollywood,” for a possible first-quarter release.
