PARIS — France Television is said to be in talks to acquire 50% of Pathe Sport, the sports theme channel owned by the Pathe group. The pubcaster is also reportedly talking to Canal Plus.
Canal Plus has said it wants to launch its own sports web after it was forced to sell its stake in Eurosport to the TF1 group following the Vivendi-Canal Plus-Seagram merger.
While still at an early stage, the discussions reported in Tuesday’s Le Monde are a prelude to France’s switch to digital terrestrial television next year, which will create 36 channels in place of the six currently available. Many joint ventures could be in the offing as French broadcasters watching their purse strings explore partnership prospects.
