Dancer Mario Delamo, known for his work with choreographer Martha Graham, died on May 13 of hepatitis and liver failure in Los Angeles. He was 55.
The only dancer of his generation said to have received a letter from Graham authorizing him to teach her dance technique, Delamo began dancing with Graham in 1972 after studying with Norman Walker and Alvin Ailey.
His early studies with such modern dance pioneers as May O’Donnell, Gertrude Schurr, Walker, and Ailey provided him with a technique known for its purity. Graham choreographed the well-received duet “Ecuatorial” for Delamo and Yuriko Kimura in 1978.
