Gina Smith, Blackground Records product manager, died Aug. 25 in the Bahamas in the plane crash that took the lives of singer Aaliyah and seven others. She was 30.
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Smith graduated from the U. of Texas at Arlington in 1993 with a marketing degree. She then took a job at an information technology company which took her to Los Angeles. Last year, Smith was offered a marketing position with Blackground Records in New York.
As a marketing executive, Smith oversaw the advertising, packaging and sales for Aaliyah’s music. Part of her assignment was to accompany Aaliyah to Abaco Island for the musicvideo shoot.
Smith is survived by her mother, father and an aunt.
