Gary Herman, longtime producer and director of news and special events programming, died March 5 of heart and kidney disease in Los Angeles. He was 65.Herman started his career at ABC News in 1961 and went on to direct and produce segments of “The Reasoner Report” from 1967-1975. He later produced the independent feature film “The Hitter” starring Ron O’Neal and in 1980 KNBC’s Emmy-nominated documentary “Adults Only.” After serving two years in the early 1990s as West Coast producer for King World’s “Inside Edition,” Herman produced the pilots “Weekend Variety” and “Variety’s Reviews ’92” for Turner Program Services. Herman also served as news director for “Entertainment Tonight” and helped organize coverage of entertainment news as the West Coast producer for ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He is survived by his sister, artist and television script supervisor Shelly Herman.
