Brazilian TV helmer shake-up bad news for ailing pay-per-view group
RIO DE JANEIRO — José Augusto Pinto Moreira is expected to be elected the new prexy of the Brazilian Pay TV and Telecom Association (ABTA) next month. Moreira is the president of cabler TVA, one of Brazil’s largest MSOs, and is the only candidate for the post. Industry members will vote during their annual confab in Sao Paulo, Oct. 1-3.
Moreira will replace Moyses Pluciennik, who has reached the end of his term and is also ankling as CEO of leading MSO Globo Cabo. Industry vet Alexandre Annenberg will become ABTA’s executive director, filling a vacant position.
ABTA’s new execs will face the challenge of representing a sector that has been hit by the country’s economic slowdown, a sharp devaluation of the local currency, and looming competition in 2002 from the big telcos.
