Marsalis clan trumpets Armstrong

Benefit proceeds will fund UNO's Jazz Studies program

The musically prodigious Marsalis brothers — Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason — their father, veteran pianist Ellis Marsalis, and Harry Connick Jr. have all signed on for a benefit concert in New Orleans to commemorate the 100th birthday of legendary jazz trumpeter Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong.

The show, entitled “Satchmo to Marsalis: A Tribute to the Fathers of Jazz,” kicks off Aug. 4 in the Lakefront Arena at the U. of New Orleans, where Ellis Marsalis has taught music for more than 34 years.

Proceeds from the concert will fund an endowment in the senior Marsalis’ name for the university’s Jazz Studies program. Among those on the volunteer committee promoting the event are thesps John Goodman and Helen Mirren, helmer Taylor Hackford and vet jazz critic Sy Kravitz.

Performance is part of a weeklong celebration of Armstrong, who was born in New Orleans in 1901.
