Ted Turner’s having a tough year. The feisty CNN founder is basically out of a job and going through a divorce. Now wildfires are tearing through his vast Vermejo Park Ranch, which comprises 578,000 acres in New Mexico and Colorado.
All told, Turner owns a total of some 1.7 million acres, making him the largest private landholder in the U.S. The fire, ignited by lightning, started on Saturday. It was contained Monday but the wind kicked up and pushed the flames past the fire lines firefighters had cut through pine forest.
Turner wasn’t at the ranch and no structures have been endangered.
