Yale Rep taps Bundy

Ivy school hires new dean, artistic director

SOUTHBURY, Conn. — James Bundy has been named dean of the Yale School of Drama and artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theater in New Haven, Conn.

A 1995 MFA directing graduate of the Drama School who is currently artistic director of Cleveland’s Great Lakes Theater Festival and adjunct professor of theater at Case Western Reserve U., Bundy will take up his appointment July 1 for a five-year term.

The selection of Bundy, who has a relatively low profile in the national theater world, comes after a far-ranging two-year search that necessitated the extension by a year of the two five-year terms of the current Drama School dean and Rep a.d., Stan Wojewodski Jr. At Yale, it’s standard practice for deans to serve only 10 years.

Bundy has been a.d. of the Great Lakes Theater Festival since 1998, during which time the fest’s attendance has grown by more than 30% and its school-based theater education program has been significantly expanded.

“Mr. Bundy is, in the view of all who have worked with him in various settings, an extraordinary leader,” said Yale president Richard C. Levin. “His keen intelligence, his willingness to listen and his quiet self-confidence mark him as capable of taking the Drama School and the Yale Repertory Theater to new heights of excellence.”
