Legit award for excellence awarded
CHICAGO — In celebration of the 40th anniversary last week of the Fisher Theater, the Motor City’s preeminent roadhouse, Detroit’s Nederlander family has created the Sarah Applebaum Nederlander Award for Excellence in Theater and awarded the first to Neil Simon.
Nod involves $10,000 cash, a crystal apple and an obligation to talk to students at the Wayne State U. theater department.
“Apple” Nederlander, who died in 1991 at the age of 97, was the wife of the late David T. Nederlander, the patriarch of a family legit empire still powerful in New York, Chicago and Detroit.
Simon, 74, will be feted at a fund-raising gala in Detroit in late November, shortly after the New York opening of his newest play, “45 Seconds From Broadway.”
