Circle piles noms on yet-to-bow 'Producers,' '42nd'

See complete list of Outer Critics Circle nominees

In an unusual spin on awards shows, the Outer Critics Circle bestowed most of its nominations on two productions that have yet to open on Broadway: The revival of “42nd Street,” which opens May 2, nabbed 11 noms, while “The Producers,” which opens April 19, got 10.

Not that the legit critics org went crazy for every show waiting in the wings. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” set to open on April 26, garnered just two minor noms. Also, August Wilson was not cited for his play “King Hedley II,” which opens April 29.

The OCC, comprising Gotham theater critics for out-of-town publications, overlooked a few big stars in its list of nominations, including Gary Sinise in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Alan Bates in “The Unexpected Man” and all four principals (Blythe Danner, Judith Ivey, Gregory Harrison and Treat Williams) in the revival of “Follies.”

Special achievement awards will be given to Sean Campion and Conleth Hill for “Stones in His Pockets,” the ensemble of “The Dinner Party” and, in the words of the OCC nominating committee, “Reba McEntire for revitalizing ‘Annie Get Your Gun.’ “

Winners in the following categories will be announced on April 30 with the 51st annual awards ceremony to be held on May 24 at Sardi’s. Following is a complete list of nominees:
