SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Will Rhys, a former artistic director of the National Theater of the Deaf and of the Cleveland Play House, has been appointed to the newly expanded position of Goodspeed Musicals’ education director. He’ll be based at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn.
“Our mission is to help perpetuate the art form of musical theater,” says Goodspeed general manager Harriet Guid-Kittner, “and we didn’t appoint our new education director until we knew we had the right person for the job.”
Goodspeed has not had an education director for some years. The position will include audience education but will embrace every aspect of the creation of musical theater, including, according to Guid-Kittner, “how and where do orchestrators learn how to orchestrate; how and where do choreographers learn how to choreograph.”
Rhys continues to be a faculty member of the pre-professional training program of the National Theater Institute and a visiting lecturer and guest artist at universities and colleges around the country. He also continues to be a freelance director and actor.
