B’way’s ‘Music’ gets a new man

Previous legit work at Stratford Fest, Manitoba Theatre

NEW YORK — From Will to Hill, Eric McCormack replaces Craig Bierko in the current Broadway revival of Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man,” effective May 8. Bierko’s last perf as professor Harold Hill is May 6.

McCormack stars in the NBC sitcom “Will & Grace.” The Canada-born actor’s previous legit work includes performances at the Stratford Festival, the Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. “The Music Man” marks his Broadway debut.

McCormack is one of several TV and film thesps taking theater gigs this spring/summer. As a career move, it gives them job insurance if the impending Screen Actors Guild strike materializes in late June. If the strike never happens or quickly fizzles, they will go back to their day jobs come August.

The Broadway revival of “The Music Man” opened April 27 with co-stars Bierko and Rebecca Luker, who continues in the production as Marian the librarian.
