HOLLYWOOD — Actors’ Equity has confirmed a ring of thieves stole and tried to cash up to 20 checks mailed to its Los Angeles office several months ago, adding that no one has been arrested in the thefts.
Alan Eisenberg, exec director of the organization, said investigations have cleared Equity employees of any wrongdoing. “We’re very satisfied that no one on our staff was involved,” he added.
The exec said the thefts took place between November and February and were mostly of checks written by producers to Equity for payment of performer dues or bonding requirements. The scam involved stealing checks from mailbags prior to their delivery to Equity’s Wilshire Boulevard offices.
Eisenberg said Equity became aware of the thefts after producers notified the org about discrepancies on the endorsement of checks. The thefts were then reported to Los Angeles police.
