Dutch director Jean van de Velde, who scored hits with “Little Blond Death” and “All Stars,” delivers a slick, compelling entertainment with police action-thriller “Leak.” Adapted from a true story chronicled by a former cop, this tough, fast-paced drama dominated the Netherlands’ leading film awards last year, taking Golden Calf trophies for best film, director, screenplay and actor Victor Low. While commercial fare of this type rarely crosses many borders theatrically, Eurotube buyers should be receptive.
Young cop Eddy (Cas Jansen) is forced by his superiors to corner Jackie (Low), a childhood friend-turned-criminal, into informing on a ruthless drug lord (Ton Kas). Softened by the arrival of his baby daughter, Jackie cooperates, but his life is endangered by a leak within the force. Ostracized and suspended from duty while attempting to uncover the corrupt elements, Eddy, along with his pregnant wife (Ricky Koole), becomes a target of mob violence.
Edited and shot with unflagging energy, pic boasts a steady current of suspense and well-handled action. Cast is solid, especially Low, who deftly balances his charismatic character’s paternal and thuggish sides.
