COPENHAGEN — Norwegian “Elling,” the local blockbuster helmed by Peter Naess, has been picked up for international distribution outside Scandinavia by Denmark’s Trust Film Sales. Trust, the international sales outfit of Zentropa Entertainment, will launch the film globally at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival Sept. 6 -15.
“It is a small Norwegian film that has exactly the qualities matching the product profile we (are trying) to build up,” said sales director Annakarin Strom, who made the deal with producer Dag Alveberg.
Produced by new Norwegian production company Maipo Film-og TV-produksjon, “Elling” follows two men released from a psychiatric institution trying to cope with life on the outside.
Scripted by Axel Hellstenius from Ingvar Ambjornsen’s novel “Blood Brothers,” and starring Per Christian Ellefsen and Sven Nordin, the pic has sold 700,000 tix domestically, making it No. 1 on the charts for UIP Norway.
UIP has Scandinavian rights for Naess’ feature, which will compete for the Nordic Grand Prix at the Norwegian Intl. Film Festival Aug. 27-Sept 1.
