MADRID — Taking a large step toward becoming the top Spanish distribber, TriPictures has concluded an output deal for Spain with New Line encompassing all NL pics except for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which will be handled by Aurum.
The two-year deal kicks off in January and includes titles such as the third Austin Powers pic — “Goldmember,” “Blade 2” and “I Am Sam.”
The agreement coincides with a renewal of TriPictures’ long-term deal with Mandalay, and with a two-year output agreement with the Mutual Film Group.
Headed by Felipe and Luis Ortiz and Jose Hueva, veteran shingle TriPictures is admired in Spain by other distribs for its longevity and economical but effective marketing of pics. The new long-term accords will radically reduce TriPictures’ need to pick up third party movies and mark another big shift in Spain’s distribution sector, where bitter bidding wars have increasingly strained some players’ bottom lines.
“These deals confirm our definitive consolidation as an indie distributor. They give us stability in links to prestige product providers,” TriPictures prexy Felipe Ortiz tells Variety. “We will now release 18 to 20 strong titles a year, but we will remain a boutique, carefully launching every title.”
