‘Tomb Raider’ tops in Japan

Strong 'Spirited' 2nd to Jolie starrer with mere 5% drop

Muscling into Japan last weekend, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” kicked serious butt — and knocked long-running local champ “Spirited Away” off its pedestal.

The Angelina Jolie vehicle racked up $6.6 million in three days on 358 screens, benefiting from the Monday public holiday. Pic is handled by Toho-Towa, producer Mutual Films’ Japanese partner.

“Raider” routed the reign of Toho toon “Spirited Away,” which held top spot in the market for 11 straight weeks, fighting off challenges from “Jurassic Park III,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Rush Hour 2” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”

Despite the “Lara Croft” invasion, the remarkably resilient “Spirited Away” dipped by a mere 5% in its 12th weekend in Japan’s key cities.

Foreign cume of “Croft” topped $115 million, highlighted by the U.K.’s $17.6 million, Germany’s $12 million, France’s $11.1 million, Australia’s $8.2 million and Spain’s $7.7 million. Pic’s last remaining market is Italy, where it’s slated for Dec. 14.
