O'seas preems leave fall springing forward

After a late start, the fall B.O. overseas gained momentum over the weekend, spurred by smash preems of “American Pie 2” in German-speaking markets and “Rush Hour 2” Down Under as well as solid entries elsewhere by “The Fast and the Furious,” “Moulin Rouge” and “America’s Sweethearts.”

Launching in its first major market, the “American Pie” sequel gobbled up $8.2 million on 813 screens in Germany, a local UIP record, 60% up on the original and the territory’s fourth best all-time opener after “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace,” “Men in Black” and “Independence Day.”

The laffer scored $948,000 on 102 in Austria (the territory’s third-best bow, 81% up on the first “Pie”), $528,000 on 42 in Switzerland and $220,000 on 60 in South Africa. Through its third lap in Israel, pic has pocketed a lively $817,000.

New Line’s “Rush Hour 2” nabbed $1.8 million on 299 in Australia (Roadshow’s seventh-biggest debut) and $240,000 on 40 in New Zealand. Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker vehicle abated by a reasonable 25% in Japan (excluding the prior weekend’s previews), where the nine-day tally is a juicy $6.9 million. Cume reached $48.2 million with Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Holland and most of Latin America ahead.

“The Fast and the Furious” motored into France in second spot behind the soph session of local pic “Vidocq,” stealing $1.6 million on 397 — 73% bigger than “Road Trip” and 144% better than “The Mexican.” The actioner ruled in Belgium with $371,000 on 40, fared OK in Denmark and the Philippines but was lousy in Thailand.

‘Others’ smothers rivals

“Moulin Rouge” cancanned into Italy with $707,000 on 150, overshadowed by that other Nicole Kidman starrer, “The Others” (which has earned a strapping $4.1 million through its third frame), and rookie “Swordfish” ($980,000 on 250, WB’s best opening of the year, on par with “Gone in Sixty Seconds”).

Fox’s tuner rang up $299,000 on 50 in Belgium (ahead of “Shakespeare in Love” and “Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet” in local currency) and a fair $166,000 on 25 in Norway. Cume hit $45.7 million, highlighted by the U.K.’s $15.4 million in 24 days (slipping just 15%), bringing the worldwide total to $102.2 million. “Swordfish” cume levitated to $45.9 million, helped by Taiwan’s estimated $1.5 million in nine days.

“America’s Sweethearts” wooed $1.3 million on 266 in Spain, trailing “The Others,” which soared to a phenom $16 million through its fourth outing. The Julia Roberts starrer ranked first in Taipei ($198,000 on 17, including sneaks) and fourth in South Korea ($344,000 on 57) and Hong Kong ($250,000 on 29).

Retaining pole position in the U.K., “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” eased by 22%, uploading $2.2 million on 430 and elevating its 10-day take to a swell $7 million. Steven Spielberg’s sci-fier smashed WB’s opening record in Portugal ($275,000 on 55) but wasn’t as luminous in Sweden or Israel; cume is $123.7 million.

‘Enigma’ clearly hits

In its world preem, “Enigma,” the Michael Apted-helmed spy thriller toplining Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet, snared a sterling $1.1 million on 270 in the U.K., drawing especially well in the West End (pic is slated for the U.S. in January via Manhattan Pictures). It came in fractionally below fellow frosh “Mike Bassett: England Manager,” football mockumentary featuring local TV identity Ricky Tomlinson.

Mandalay’s “The Score” entered Blighty at No. 6 with $1 million on 267 but top-scored in Argentina, minting $503,000 on 45. The Robert De Niro starrer hasn’t caught on in Japan, falling 35% and earning just $1.8 million in nine days.

“Scary Movie 2” wowed Mexico to the tune of $900,000 on 244; cume is a so-so $29.9 million from 27 territories.

“Cats & Dogs” fetched a terrif $525,000 on 39 in Hong Kong and a handy $391,000 on 56 in Argentina; estimated cume topped $69 million.
