‘Shoe’ does socko biz at Austrian B.O.

Pic collects $9 mil in nine weeks

VIENNA — An unlikely German comedy about the Wild West has become the top-grossing film ever in Austria.

“Der schuh des Manitu” (Manitu’s Shoe) has racked up 1.4 million admissions, besting “Titanic,” which drew 1.39 million.

Pic has raked in 126 million Austrian shillings ($9 million) in nine weeks of release.

Pic also is a hit in its native Germany, with 7 million admissions and $40 million in grosses so far. However, pic is not doing so well in Switzerland, where it was released four weeks ago.

Hypenate’s achievement

Success of the film — based on the hugely popular novels about the American West by German author Karl May — reps an impressive achievement for Michael Herbig: He not only helmed but produced, co-wrote and starred in a double role.

“Manitu’s Shoe” was produced by Bernd Eichinger’s Munich-based Constantin Film for $4.5 million.
