Screen Gems will take slice of ‘Cut’

Kidman, Campion reunite in upcoming pic

Sony’s Screen Gems has taken domestic distribution and a number of international territories on “In the Cut,” an adaptation of the controversial erotic thriller by Susanna Moore that will reunite “The Portrait of a Lady” star Nicole Kidman and director Jane Campion.

Rights were acquired from Pathe Intl., which picked up the project and agreed to finance it during the Cannes Film Market earlier this year. Project had been put into turnaround by would-be co-financiers Universal Pictures and Miramax Films (Daily Variety, May 18).

There is no start date yet on the pic, which is budgeted at about $30 million.

Adapted by Campion and Moore, “In the Cut” is the story of a Gotham writing teacher who lives to take chances by night. When her neighborhood is rocked by a series of brutal murders, she becomes sexually involved with a detective on the case. Book was published in 1995 by Alfred A. Knopf.

Pic will be produced by Campion and Laurie Parker (“My Own Private Idaho”). Kidman, who optioned the book out of her own pocket in 1996 and funded its initial development, will take an exec producing credit.

Screen Gems also will handle the pic in Latin America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Pathe, which will be handling international sales on the pic at the upcoming London Screenings and Mifed markets, will distrib in the U.K., France, Switzerland and Benelux.
