‘Rollerball’ ‘eventized’

Lion shoots for Presidents Day release

MGM has slated John McTiernan’s “Rollerball” for wide release Feb. 8. The date directly precedes the Presidents Day holiday weekend, where the studio had much success with the record-breaking opening of “Hannibal.”

Robert Levin, president of worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution for MGM, said releasing “Rollerball” on this date was part of a strategy to “eventize” the film. He expects the film to receive a PG-13 rating.

“Rollerball” takes place in a not-so-distant future where there’s a global viewership for a renegade sport known as Rollerball at arenas all over the world. Pic stars Chris Klein, Marcus Ridley (aka LL Cool J) and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.

“Rollerball” was written by Larry Ferguson and John Pogue, based on the short story and screenplay by William Harrison. Pic is presented by MGM in association with Mosaic Media Group and produced by Charles Roven, Beau St. Clair and McTiernan, with executive producer Michael Tadross.
