Rivette’s ‘Savoir’ to open fest

Ensemble pic to screen Sept. 28 in Gotham

NEW YORK — The North American premiere of Jacques Rivette’s “Va Savoir” (“Who Knows?”) will be the opening night film at the 39th New York Film Festival, which gets under way Sept. 28 at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.

Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Jeanne Balibar, Sergio Castellitto, Helene de Fougerolles and Claude Berri, “Va Savoir” centers on a group of six sophisticates who become romantically entangled with each other during the Paris run of a Pirandello play.

Pic was produced by Martine Marignac through Pierre Grise Prods. and screened in competition at Cannes, where it was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. Following NYFF custom, it will be released in New York the day after opening the fest.

“Jacques Rivette is a filmmaker whose work has received a warm welcome at the New York Film Festival,” said fest selection committee chair Richard Pena. ” ‘La Religieuse,’ ‘L’Amour Fou,’ ‘Celine and Julie Go Boating’ and ‘La Belle Noiseuse’ are just some of the Rivette films that have made their bows in our festival and become classics in the best sense… ‘Va Savoir’ represents the high point of a great filmmaker’s 40-year career.”

Last year’s opener was “Dancer in the Dark.”

Fest, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and sponsored by Grand Marnier, runs Sept. 28-Oct. 14.
