Premiere bows 1st long-in-works plex

World Brief

Premiere Megaplex, an exhibition joint venture between Spanish broadcaster Tele 5 and indie distrib Tripictures, cut the ribbon on its first plex Saturday, bowing an eight-plex in the Spanish university city of Salamanca.

In 1998, Premiere Megaplex announced plans for a rollout of some 20 cinemas over five years. But, like other cinema loops, it has scaled back its construction ambitions, faced by creeping saturation in urban zones. Spanish cinema screens rose from 2,584 at the end of 1997 to 3,505 at the end of last year.

Premiere now is studying two more cinema projects in Spain.
