PRAGUE — The new Prague Studios opens its recently renovated soundstages Nov. 5, including the largest single soundstage in continental Europe.
Tomas Krejci, CEO and general director of Prague Studios, tells Variety that the studio is in final negotiations to bring in “Triple X” by the “Fast and Furious” team of director Rob Cohen and star Vin Diesel.
The film, produced by Revolution Studios for Sony, should go into pre-production at Prague Studios in November, in advance of its 10-week Prague shoot beginning Jan. 7.
The $1.5 million renovation of a former airplane factory took just four months. The renovation also includes state of the art silent heating and air-conditioning, “a major improvement considering how large the stages are,” Krejci says.
The new studios also have adjacent production office spaces, make-up and costume rooms, a prep area for construction and equipment storage areas. An additional electric supply has been brought in that Krejci says provides a larger capacity than rival Barrandov film studio.
“It’s definitely very good for the market,” says Jan Bock of Post Produkce Praha, which counts Emmy nominee “Anne Frank,” miniseries “The Lost Kingdom” and feature “The Affair of the Necklace” among its clients. “It’s a new possibility also for us. New soundstages will also bring new work.”
“This is another addition to the resources Prague has to offer,” says Matthew Stillman, CEO of Stillking Films, which is providing production services for “Triple X.”
The opening of the soundstages is the first phase of a planned expansion of Prague Studios. “The second step, to happen next year, is renovation of adjacent buildings into what we’re calling a ‘digital media art factory.’ We’re looking ahead as production and post-production become more integrated,” Krejci says.
“We’re on a search for one or more strategic partners to create the perfect environment for digital production in Prague,” he adds.
Krejci has also begun discussions with potential international clients interested in having a base at the new studio.
