Avary to helm Ellis novel adaptation
Kip Pardue has been added to the cast of the Lions Gate Films production “The Rules of Attraction,” with Jessica Biel and Thomas Ian Nicholas in final negotiations. “Rules” also stars James Van Der Beek and Shannyn Sossamon.
Roger Avary will direct “Rules,” which he adapted from the 1988 novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Production will start Aug. 17 in Los Angeles.
Students puzzle it out
“Rules” is set in the height of the 1980s Reagan era at a small, affluent, liberal arts college in New England and takes a satiric look at three students as they try to sort through a romantic triangle and other travails of the self-consciously postmodern undergrad.
Ellis’ sophomore effort after his 1986 bestseller “Less Than Zero,” “Rules” contains characters that are connected to both “Zero” as well as “American Psycho,” his third novel.
Kingsgate Films’ Greg Shapiro will produce the film. Lions Gate production prexy Mike Paseornek and exec VP of production Marc Butan will oversee the shoot.
Pardue, who was last seen in “Driven,” is repped by the William Morris Agency and Untitled Entertainment. Biel, who stars in the upcoming release “Summer Catch,” is repped by CAA and Strong/Morrone Entertainment. Nicholas, who can currently be seen in “American Pie 2,” is repped by Strong/Morrone.
