Spoerri to continue as consultant through 74th Awards
HOLLYWOOD — Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences controller Otto Spoerri is set to retire Monday, after a 23-year run.
Known to industryites as the man who decides who sits where at the Academy Awards, Spoerri was hired for the job in 1978 after a two-year stint as an Academy staff accountant.
Before joining AMPAS, Spoerri, whom the Wall Street Journal once called “the ultimate arbiter of industry power,” previously held posts with Orion Capital Corp. and MIS administration.
Spoerri will stay on as a consultant through the 74th Awards, to be held March 24.
