Gerald set to pen coming of age drama
First-time screenwriter Matt Gerald is set to pen “B-Boying” for Par-based Lynda Obst Prods.
Pic, based on a treatment developed inhouse at Obst Prods., is a coming of age story about a breakdancer from Philadelphia’s inner city, struggling to find his identity in a suburban magnet school.
Pic will draw on Gerald’s own experiences growing up in Miami, where he was an avid breakdancer.
Greg Hoffman, exec VP of production for Obst Prods., will oversee project with Par. A first draft is expected in about a month.
Actor/writer Gerald, who is repped by UTA, has appeared as in such films as “Tigerland” for director Joel Schumacher and Fox, and in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia.” His other credits include “The Minus Man,” the Owen Wilson starrer directed by Hampton Fancher.
Gerald is also developing a comedy spec that follows an obsessive fan of the Miami Dolphins.
Obst most recently finished production on Steven Gaghan’s directorial debut, “Abandon,” being produced with Ed Zwick and starring Katie Holmes and Benjamin Bratt.
Also in development is the Kate Hudson-starrer “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” which Obst is producing with Robert Evans and Christine Peters.
