‘Novocaine’ love fest at Woodstock

Fest to open with U.S. premiere of Martin pic

The second annual Woodstock Film Festival, to be held Sept. 20-23, has announced its lineup.

Fest will open with the U.S. premiere of “Novocaine,” which stars Steve Martin as a prosperous dentist whose life is turned upside down by a seductive patient. Helmed by David Atkins, and co-starring Laura Dern and Helena Bonham Carter, it will bow worldwide at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival.

Also playing at Woodstock: Ethan Hawke’s feature directorial debut, “Chelsea Walls”; “The American Astronaut,” directed by tyro helmer and musician Cory McAbee; and “Down and Out With the Dolls,” helmed by Kurt Voss.

Sked features more than 100 films, documentaries and shorts. Sidebar programs include a spotlight on women in film with Lisa Krueger, Karyn Kusama and Mary Harron, and which is co-presented by New York Women in Film and Television; a discussion about pics of social responsibility with Haskell Wexler; an acting dialogue with Stanley Tucci; and Jonas Mekas of Gotham’s Anthology Film Archives presenting a retrospective on avant-garde cinema.

In recognition of fest’s Woodstock locale, slate will highlight music with two docs (“Down From the Mountain” and “Women in Jazz”), a program on cinematic musicvideos, and performances by Marshall Crenshaw, Uncle Funk and Chris Thomas King.

Nine awards will be handed out this year including three new ones, for musical score, cinematography and animation. Special honors will also go to documentarians D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. Closing-night emcee will be Bill Tush of CNN’s “Showbiz This Weekend.”
